Things to Do on the Upper West Side this August

July 31 2019

With summer in full swing, August in NYC is truly electric. Make the most of the sunny days and warm nights by taking yourself along to one of the many activities on the Upper West Side. Here we’ve selected a few of our favorites, all just a short walk or train ride away from Hotel Beacon.

Jazz in Central Park

Aug. 10
You can never get enough free music during summertime in NYC. Pack a picnic and head to the Great Hill for jazz and dancing in the fresh air from 4 pm to 7 pm. Look forward to Alyson Williams, Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, Sage, and Wycliffe Gordon. Enter at 196th Street and Central Park West - weather permitting. See details.

Shakespeare in the Park

Through Aug. 11
Free Shakespeare in the Park presents Coriolanus, one of his last tragedies about a general voted into power by a populace hungry for change. Based on the life of Roman leader Caius Marcius Coriolanus, this modern-day version is directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan and deals with themes of democracy and demagoguery. Tickets are free but tricky to get a hold of. Read up on Time Out’s tips on how to secure a ticket for the city’s beloved event.
