Great Places for Outdoor Ice Skating in NYC

December 02 2019

Ice skating is a fun (if not, challenging) outing during the winter season. If you’re thinking of enjoying one of the outdoor ice rinks around the city, here’s a look at your options – from the neighborhood feel of Lasker Rink in Central Park to the iconic Rockefeller Center.

Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan

Located near Times Square, Bryant Park is a free skating rink amid holiday shops complete with a food hall and bar.
When: Open Oct. 31 through March 1, 8am to 10pm; open all holidays
Admission: Free. Skate rentals vary in price ($18-33) depending on the day of the week, with prices surging closer to the holidays. Bag check available for a fee; lockers available.

Wollman Rink in Central Park

This longtime skating rink in Central Park is a classic spot that charges a fair admission and offers skate rentals. It’s located toward the southern end of the park on the East Side between 62nd and 63rd streets.
When: Open Nov. through March; Mon-Tues 10am to 2:30pm; Wed-Thurs 10am to 10pm; Fri-Sat 10am to 11pm; Sunday 10am to 9pm
Admission: Adults $12-19, kids $6, seniors $5. Skate rentals start at $9, lockers available for $5 with $6 refundable deposit.

Lasker Rink in Central Park

Lasker Rink is an economical choice for the family. You’ll find it tucked away in Central Park, away from the crowds. Sure, it doesn’t have the ambiance of the other options, but it has a special neighborhood feel that you can’t construct anywhere else. Located at the northern end of the park between 106th and 108th streets.
When: Open late October to March 22, weather permitting. Mon-Thurs 9:30am to 4pm; Friday 9:30am to 4:50pm, 6pm to 11pm; Saturday 2pm to 11pm; Sunday 12pm to 4:30pm
Admission: Adults $9, kids $5, seniors $3. Skate rental $8, spectators $5

Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan

The iconic rink at Rockefeller Center doesn’t need an introduction. The rink operates on a first come, first served basis. For a late night experience, consider reserving a spot during the final session during the Special Starlight Skate. Located at Rockefeller Plaza between Fifth and Sixth avenues and 49th and 50th streets.
When: Oct. 12 through April, 8:30am to midnight
Admission: Adults $25-35, kids $17, skate rentals $18
