New York City: A Guide to an Alternative Valentine’s Date

January 16 2023

Valentine’s Day, for some, is just another Hallmark Holiday, and for others, it is the most romantic day of the year. However you feel about it - if you’re in a relationship, it’s likely you’ll celebrate it whether you love the day or not.

On Saint Valentine’s weekend, it can be impossible to find a reservation, theatre tickets, or even a hotel room in the heart of NYC. Even if they weren’t, for many of us, the idea of squeezing into an average Italian restaurant for an altered version of the regular set menu and a 50% price increase just isn’t that romantic.

So why not do something different? If you’re in New York this Valentine’s Day and looking for something alternative to enjoy with your loved one, why not try one of these unique experiences and avoid the public proposals this year?

New York Alternative Date Ideas

Man makes a cocktail using a metal shaker, various glasses are filled with different coloured drinks, there are other cocktail ingredients on the table

Highest Skating Rink in New York

Christmas is over, and the ice rinks are gone – but not all of them. Edge at Hudson Yards opened a new rooftop ice rink, Sky Skate. Located on the sky deck in the indoor section, the rink offers incredible views of the city and an alternative date night you’ll never forget.

Cocktail Making Experience

Love cocktails? Cocktail bars will be overflowing on Valentine's Day – with both couples and singles. Instead of waiting for hours at the bar, why not make your own cocktails? Join a couple’s cocktail-making class, and learn to make your favorite drinks like a pro – a skill you can exercise at your next “night-in” date night.

Intimate Jazz Experience

Love music? Jazz is about as romantic as it gets. While many cocktail bars will be full over Valentine’s Weekend, many of the jazz bars will have limited space and offer a much more intimate experience than a bustling bar. Smalls Jazz Bar is one of the best in the city – but there are plenty of others to visit too.

Eat with a Chef

Going out for dinner on Valentine’s Day is nothing new – but having a top-rated chef cook privately for you in their home or kitchen is something most people haven’t done before. There are many options to choose from here in New York – notably, Eatwith New York and Chef’s Dinner Table NYC  – and any of them will be an experience you’ll remember forever.

There are plenty of other “alternative” date ideas to enjoy in the city – from extreme sports to food tours. Whatever you decide, the most important thing is to enjoy yourself, and remember to book in advance.

If you’re traveling to NYC for Valentine’s Day, hotel rooms and restaurant reservations will start filling up soon – don’t get left out!
