Indoor Skiing, Ziplining, and Skydiving in New York City: An Adrenalin Seeker’s Guide to the Big Apple

September 19 2022

New York – or the city that never sleeps – really does offer something for everyone. If you’re trying to plan your dream Big Apple get-away but you’re finding dragging your thrill-seeking friends and family to the “concrete jungle” a little difficult, we know how you can make the best of both worlds.

For those who love the great outdoors - throwing themselves out of planes or off mountains (no judgment!) the idea of a weekend in a metropolis, with people everywhere and nothing more hair-raising than navigating a crosswalk to deal with can seem boring.

But fear not (or fear as much as you like) there are hundreds of places to get your adrenaline pumping in New York, and all without leaving the city.

Indoor Skydiving

Located in Westchester, visitors to the iFly Indoor Skydiving facility can experience the real sensation of skydiving – without having to leave the city (or the comfort of solid ground). The skydiving device uses multiple fans to allow users to enjoy an experience that is indistinguishable from the actual feeling of jumping out of a plane at 11,000 ft and children as young as three years old can take part!

Glass Floor

Glass floors have grown in popularity over the last few years – and while you will never catch us putting our faith in glass strong enough to stand on, that doesn’t mean you can’t give it a try. SUMMIT one Vanderbilt is New York’s newest glass floor and offers the best experience yet. The 6000 square meter space offers views in every direction – including to the streets 324 meters below. Unlike other glass floor experiences in the city, the installation at SUMMIT is walk-through, immersive experience, satisfying both the thrill seeker and the art lover.

Tree Top Adventure

Before the winter hits, a great way to really enjoy the great outdoors without leaving the city, is a trip to the Bronx Zoo. Within the grounds you can find the tree top adventure – an aerial ropes course with 90 obstacles, 10 ziplines, and 10 rides all without touching the ground. Children as young as seven can get involved – but it’s best to book in advance to not miss out.

Skyscraper Climbing

So, you love climbing? What about when it comes to man-made structures? The Edge in NYC is the city’s only place where you can legally and safely scale a skyscraper. Are you up for it? Located in the Hudson Yards, the Edge offers unprecedented views of the city – if you’re brave enough to look down! (The Edge is also home to a glass floor that juts out over the city for those of you who wish to stand on a ledge of glass 100 floors above ground!).

Indoor Skiing

Been waiting all summer for winter to hit? Did you know you can ski all year round – right in New York City? The Big Snow American Dream offers “real snow” and a range of slopes all year round, whether it’s your first time or you’re getting back into practice for another season in Aspen. Skiing is the perfect way to please the adrenalin junkie in your travel group.
