Avoiding the Snowstorms: What to do in NYC When a Snowstorm Hits

January 15 2024

New York famously gets a huge amount of snow every winter – however over the last few years, heavy snowfall seems to have bypassed the city. But after two winters with very little snow, in 2024 it’s predicted that heavy snowfall will return to the Big Apple.

If you’re not used to snow, it’s a magical experience – but one that quickly wears off when you can’t feel your feet and your gloves are soaked through. For the most part, if there’s a lot of snow you’re going to want to stay indoors and avoid the cold.

So, what do you do to avoid a snowstorm in NYC?

Luckily New York is home to endless indoor experiences for everyone to enjoy, whether you’re travelling as a couple, a family, or on your own.

The Met is a great place to avoid the cold and see some of the best art collections in the world. Displaying over 5000 years of art from all over the planet, there is plenty to see and experience with over 1.5 million works of art on display.

One of the best things about New York is the coffee – and there is no better way to warm up than with a fresh cup of New York’s finest. With endless cafes and diners to choose from, finding somewhere to escape the cold and warm your hands is easy wherever you are in the city.

If you’re looking for something more adventurous (i.e. you have kids to tire out!) The Chelsea Piers offers a wide range of indoor activities from ice skating to rock climbing. The Chelsea Piers has three locations to explore - Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Connecticut – and booking in advance is highly recommended.

New York is one of the entertainment capitals of the world and whether you love the theatre, musicals, concerts, or film screenings – you can find them all. Enjoying some of the city’s excellent entertainment is one of the best ways to stay out of the cold in a winter storm.

New York under a blanket of snow is a beautiful experience and a great photo opportunity. If you want to see the snow without having to head outside, there are endless observation decks and viewing platforms in the city where you can get a bird’s eye view of the city in the snow while staying nice and warm.
