Plant-Based Restaurants in New York City

October 17 2022

Not everyone wants to take the leap into being a full-time vegan or vegetarian, however, some experts have suggested that staying “plant-based” is a positive way to protect the planet going forward.

The “plant-based movement” has taken menus all over the world by storm – whether it’s jackfruit tacos or impossible meats, the meat-free options are endless.

If you’re trying to commit to a plant-based diet but you’re worried about your up-and-coming vacation to New York, don’t worry – the plant-based movement is here, and the food is great (even for your fussy family member!).

But what should you try?

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of plant-based menus to try in New York, but these stand out as must-sees when eating out in the city.

Glur Thai

Who doesn’t love good Thai food? The perfect mix of sweet and spice, Thai food is some of the best “comfort food” you will find in the city – and Glur Thai is a great place to try vegan alternatives. A lot of Thai dishes use fish sauce as an ingredient – however, almost every item on Glur’s menu can be made vegan-friendly, without sacrificing that authentic Thai flavor.

Jerrell’s BETR BRGR

Plant-based burgers were one of the first vegan/veggie dishes to appear on menus and now they are the showstopper at many meat-free joints. In the last few months, the smash-burger scene has knocked the gourmet burger off its pedestal – and one of the most celebrated smash-burger restaurants in the city is entirely vegan. If you’re looking for a cheesy, greasy smash-burger experience, BETR BRGR is perfect for you.

Dirt Candy

Special occasion coming up? Plant-based fine dining experiences can be found all over the Big Apple, but our favorite is Dirt Candy. The restaurant has been open for more than 10 years and is one of the most renowned vegan restaurants in New York, if not the country. Five-course tasting menus start at $95 per person, an unforgettable treat for the plant-based eater in your life.

00+Co

What is a trip to New York without a pizza slice? 00+Co has been in business since 2016 and provides some of the best vegan pizzas in the city. As well as vegan pizzas (cooked in a real wood-fired oven) – using a range of plant-based cheeses – you can also enjoy plant-based gelato and a range of organic, European wines.

Bar Verde

There is no occasion that tacos aren’t perfect for – and New York is home to some of the best in the country. For plant-based eaters, tacos are a great choice thanks to the variety of ingredients to choose from and the ease to switch out an ingredient to make something plant-based friendly. Bar Verde offers some of the best vegan and vegetarian tacos in the state, as well as a variety of other famous Latin American dishes, and an extensive tequila and mezcal list to finish off with.
