Loft Law Exhibition: The Last of New York’s Artists’ Lofts
June 10 2024
Art and New York go hand in hand, and artists have flocked to the city from all over the world for centuries. From the world-famous pieces in the many NYC galleries to the intricate street art and murals, you can find art just about everywhere in the city - but where are the artists themselves?
For the first time, some of the artists in the city have opened up their studios and lofts, and the unique Loft Law exhibition is the best way to see how some of the city’s artists live.
The lofts are primarily located in SoHo and the East Village - starting life as industrial units that were transformed into studios, lofts, and homes, by artists in the mid-20th century. Famous artists including Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Robert Rauschenberg have produced work in lofts, factories, and studios in the area.
The New York’s Artist Lofts exhibition gives a true insight into the artist’s lifestyles and workspaces, as well as their art itself. The exhibition was created by filmmaker and photographer Joshua Charow, who photographed the artist’s spaces - the last of the artist’s lofts that have stood strong against gentrification.
The exhibition is on display at Westwood Gallery in New York until July 13th, 2024. If you’re unable to make the exhibition, you can check out the video preview on Instagram here.
Whether you’re into art, or simply curious about the history of New York’s cultural scene, this is exhibition is a must-see if you’re in the city.
