Beating January Blues in New York

January 10 2022

January can be a difficult month– the excitement of the holidays is long gone; it's freezing cold and you have to make your paycheck last for what seems like a lifetime. On top of it all, the whole world seems to be pressuring you to join the gym, get healthy, try a new ridiculous sport, and give up all your vices.

Rather than putting on the pressure to change your life this New Year or losing yourself to the January Blues, we have created the ultimate list of unique distractions to keep your spirits high.

The Escape Game – 295 Madison Avenue

In the past decade escape rooms have become increasingly popular all over the world and New York is home to – arguably – the best escape room in the world. Whether you’re a NYC resident, or you’re just visiting, The Escape Game is the perfect way to escape the rain (or snow) during the winter months and do something you have never tried before with family, friends or work colleagues.

Tour with a Photographer

New York is home to some of the best photo opportunities in the world, even when the weather is bad, and with smartphones we all have a decent camera in our pockets. But that doesn’t mean we are all photographers. If you want to see the city from a unique standpoint and take home the perfect photos of you and your family, friends or partner, why not try a photography tour?

Donut Tour

In January everywhere you look we are being encouraged to eat cleaner, and be healthier – but where is the fun in that? If you’re looking for the perfect anti-January activity in the city, the Donut Tour is the perfect way to see it all – and please your taste buds along the way! The Underground Donut Tour is located in Manhattan and throughout the tour you will learn the history of New York, at the same time as sampling some of the best donuts the city has to offer - what better way to explore Manhattan?!

Secret Spots in Central Park

Central Park is probably the most famous park in the world, so it might surprise you to discover the green space is full of secret spots. On a sunny January day, make a stroll through Central Park more interesting by trying one of the secret spot tours. From whispering benches to the ruins of the forgotten Seneca Village, this TimeOut tour will take you to the best spots and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Whispering Gallery in Grand Central Station. Arched ceilings with steps leading towards the rest of the station.

Grand Central Terminal Whispering Gallery

Grand Central Station in New York is the most recognizable train station in the country. The station is over 100 years old and home to a unique whispering gallery that is open to the public. To find the gallery, visit the dining area on the lower floor of the station (in front of the Oyster Bar and Restaurant). In pairs, stand on the opposite sides of the arch at the entrance, and face the wall. If you speak, even in a whisper, the other person should be able to hear you clearly.

Hit the Sales – Retail Therapy

If all else fails, NYC is one of the best places in the world to shop – and with the January sales, you have the perfect excuse. There are around 8000 chain stores in Manhattan and the shopping opportunities are endless. If you want to beat the January Blues, retail therapy is definitely worth a try!
